A virtual web hosting company called
'your-name-here'
very good service! and excellent support from Doughie and Laura:
Based in Blackpool offering domain name registrations and web space for Personal and Business Users a like.
At the time of writing it cost £120.00p a year to host your site in cyberspace.
Dial UP Internet Connection now supplied to customers only.
Getting onto their server via a freeby provider or an 8000 number or a 24/7 contract isn't hard!
Recently they've provided PHP version 4.01 and '1' MySQL database to all Unix customers. Now the down side, currently no sub domains and it is quite expensive compared to some web providers, but as I say you pay for good service. Also you do get the added thrill of your own Domain Name with your own eMail name in front as in ... |

NTL - broadband has arrived in SWINDON.
(and it is whoooossshhhh!)
The cable modem I'm using is rented at £5.00 a month,
the line rental for always on connection is £20.00p a month.
Total £25.00p added on to your existing NTL Phone or your TV Cable Bill.
Service is rapid and the Installer(s) really know their stuff:
BUT!! - and this is the BIGGIE!! YOU! really need to know your stuff to use it!
YOU! have to set up your machine's network card to connect to the modem and make sure it's working,
because as far as NTL are concerned their bit STOPS! at the end of their cable.

My usual freeby ISP Provider 'PO-BOX' just use 'pobox' as your log on name and 'pobox'
as your password - free no hassle internet access. No sign up! just instant access
- very good and very discreet! also consider 'BT-Click'

How - for just (GBP) 40.00 to get a 5 user eMail Server up and running, no hidden catch's, not
expensive; but more users, the price does go up! A main benefit is every one on your LAN can
use their own email client it doesn't matter what it is!
You must however be using a TCP/IP LAN for this to all work. i.e.: windows 3.11/95!

This is a picture of 'V' Socks the FREE network/internet sharing program (a proxy server!)
from vpop3 (above) no support, but what do you want for free! - again like vpop3 it runs
only on a TCP/IP LAN with sockets '2' upgrade from Microsoft:
NOTE: wont (Doesn't) work with version 1.0 as shipped with '95' you have to upgrade your sockets client ie: the machine connecting to the server.
Windows '98' is fine as it stands.
As I've recently upgraded to NTL this is redundant ...
but I'm leaving it in for information - It's still very good product. |

(FTP)-ing as I found out through a socks server is a pain, but not with a product called
Leapware an FTP program - It's very good indeed; real easy to set up and operate on a network
through a proxy server - This product is recommended by the VPOP3 people and rightly so!
- cost you about $30.00 - (share ware trial for 30 days)
please NOTE! that's dollars worth every cent.

The web page software package I'm using is called ...
It's free to use, a new release due very soon Oct-> Nov 2001?
[ well maybe not! - The place in Oz! is apparently shut down, so I dunno what's going on!] Anyhow It's the BEST web editor I've found thus far: I was using FrontPage. Its got some good points, the painting screen for example! but it can really screw up your code! A real pain if your web pages go wrong and you try to fix something manually! All in all, Frontpage is not recommended! |

My Hardware Setup for the eMail Server.
It's an old DELL 486 24 Meg of RAM: 1.5 Meg Hard Drive: Networked into the NTL Cable Modem via a standard 10 MegaBit Ether net Card: A Laser Printer on LPT and a Digital Camera Download Port looped in.
so it also doubles as a Print Server and a Digital Image Repository.
I've got 4 users on my network all wired into a 4 port LINKSYS RouterAll running with Windows 95(tm) OSR 2.0
(PC World £145.00p) now a lot LESS!!!!
